It wasn’t just that I was sweating. The fabric itself refused to dry. The issue wasn’t my body. It was the material I’d been wrapping myself in for months: polyester drap sheets, worn in winter and summer alike, without ever questioning the fiber.

The truth is, synthetic fabrics act as a thermal trap. They don’t breathe. Polyester retains heat and moisture, trapping sweat between your skin and the sheet. This explains the sudden drenching that has nothing to do with room temperature. If you are prone to night sweats, polyester creates that unpleasant clammy sensation. Both are breathable, absorbent, and thermoregulating. The difference lies in the fiber structure, which allows air to circulate instead of forming a waterproof barrier.

Linen is particularly effective for difficult nights. It is naturally thermoregulating, making it ideal for hot summer nights. It allows air to flow freely and absorbs moisture quickly. The texture is slightly rough at first but softens rapidly with washing. It stands in stark contrast to polyester, which never changes behavior regardless of the season.

Percale cotton offers a different approach. It is softer yet equally effective. Woven from the longest cotton fibers at a density of 80 threads per square centimeter, percale resists time and daily use. It regulates body temperature and facilitates aeration. The matte grain feels cool to the touch, even after hours under heavy covers. This specific weave is designed to let air pass through.

Cotton satin also deserves a spot on this list of alternatives. Unlike polyester, cotton satin is absorbent and suitable for those who sweat at night. However, you must read the label carefully. Cheap “satin” is often disguised polyester, carrying the exact same defects as the sheet that woke me up.

How Bedroom Temperature Affects Sleep Quality

Changing your sheets isn’t enough if the room itself remains a sauna. The ADEME recommends keeping a bedroom at 17°C (62.6°F) at night. This number surprises people accustomed to heating or cooling above 20°C for immediate comfort. But that comfort comes at the cost of sleep quality.

This relative coolness follows a precise physiological mechanism. At bedtime, the brain’s hypothalamus lowers body temperature. Sleeping in a warm room, wrapped in a fabric that already blocks heat evacuation, fights this natural process on two fronts. The body wants to cool down. The room and the sheet prevent it. The result is sweating and midnight awakenings.

I realized my mistake wasn’t negligence. It was habit. We buy a duvet cover once and keep it for years. We don’t treat it like a garment that should change with the seasons. A wool sweater doesn’t stay on your back through summer. Why would a synthetic sheet stay on the mattress all year?
